New TNA Tag Team Champions

mex

I find it odd when relatively new teams are booked in matches where they will “never team again.” Such was the case on last night’s Impact Wrestling when Chavo Guerrero & Hernandez put their team on the line against Bobby Roode and Austin Aries’ TNA Tag Team Champions in a 2 out of 3 Falls Match.

In what can only be described as a miscarriage of justice (sorry big Aries mark here), Guerrero & Hernandez prevailed 2 falls to 1 to regain the TNA Tag Team Championship from Austin & Roode aka the Dirty Heels. While the tag team action was quite enjoyable, oddly, the first two falls occurred VERY early into the match essentially negating the multi-fall stipulation.

First and foremost, congrats to the Texans natives, Guerrero & Hernandez on their victory. Your boy Louis isn’t doing backflips over the victory however. TNA has thrown away, at least for the gold, a TNA tag team dream match of sorts that had been teased previously on Impact: Bad Influence (Daniels & Kazarian) versus Dirty Heels (Roode & Aries).

Between WWE, TNA, and ROH, there’s a lot of gold changing hands in the wrestling world this week.

Impact Wrestling Preview – 4/4/2013

Tonight is the final edition of Impact Wrestling before the big event on 4/11/13, when no fewer than two titles will be defended.

Bully-Brooke Summit

TNA World Champ Bully Ray really wants to speak with Mrs. Ray, but she just isn’t returning his phone calls.  Perhaps Bully missed a golden opportunity to call out Brooke on last week’s Open Fight Night, but he’ll likely force a confrontation tonight.  Bully Ray has made it abundantly clear that he and his wife are together ’til death, and there’s nothing for the Hogan’s to offer to get him to change his mind.  Still, you can fully expect to see the Hulkster intervene.

Number-one contender Jeff Hardy should also get in the mix somehow.  It always seems like Hardy is an afterthought when it comes to the World Title, even when he was champion.

Last week, we covered the new set of rules for the TNA X-Division going forward - 230-lb weight limit, triple-threat matches.  If one loses a fall in a title match, then he must fight his way back in.

Sonjay Dutt was pinned by Kenny King in last week’s championship match, and thus will compete in another triple-threat match next week in an effort to gain another title shot.  His opponents will be Mason Andrews and the returning Petey Williams.

Mason Andrews wrestled in the X-Division in 2012 before going on to worldwide fame as “Harold” in the Kane & Daniel Bryan “Anger Management” segments.  Petey Williams was a mainstay of the early days of TNA with Team Canada and is likely best known for this:

Open Fight Night returns as Impact Wrestling rolls through Arkansas.

Hardy vs. The Bikers

We know that the rematch between TNA Champ Bully Ray and Jeff Hardy is scheduled for two weeks on Impact Wrestling (4/11/13).  In the meantime, the #1 contender is expected to call out a member of the Aces & Eights tonight.  Of course, the rest of the rogue bikers will likely back up the challengee, so it will be interesting to see if Hardy gets support from his opponents in last week’s top contender match (Angle, Joe, Magnus).

New X-Division Rules

The X-Division may still be about “No Limits,” but it now has a weight limit.

That’s one of the changes announced for the X-Division on Impact Wrestling last night.  Here’s a brief rundown of the new rules:

  • 230-lb weight limit
  • Every X-Division match, including title matches, will be triple-threat matches
  • Title Matches – The winner is the champ (obviously), and the loser is eliminated from the next title match
  • Title Contender Match – The loser of the last match plus two new contenders will fight their way in to the next title match

Last night, Kenny King retained his title by pinning Sonjay Dutt in a triple-threat match also featuring Zema Ion.  So, Zema lives to fight in the next title match.  Dutt now must wrestle two new contenders in an attempt to get into the next title match.

After the jump, we’ll have a full list of X-Division eligible wrestlers on the TNA roster.
