The Morning Roundup 11/21/16

Survivor Series Results – WWE

Well, NONE of that went how I was expecting. Goldberg shockingly defeated Brock Lesnar in under 2 minutes, Team SmackDown lost two battles but won the big war in a near 60-minute elimination match, the IC title remained on the Blue Brand, and the Cruiserweights stay on Raw. Hit up the link for full details.

Goldberg Will Rumble – Pro Wrestling Sheet

Speaking of Goldberg, Pro Wrestling Sheet is reporting the former WCW World Champion has agreed to appear in the 2017 Royal Rumble. You have to think whatever occurs at the Rumble will set up a third match between Goldberg & Lesnar.

NXT Takeover Results – WWE

Not to be outdone, NXT held a fantastic Takeover event Saturday night, highlighted by an excellent NXT Tag Team Championship 2 out of 3 falls match and a new NXT Champion.

Ospreay captures ROH Television Championship, And Then Drops Title to Scurll – ROH

The ROH Television Championship was a hot potato this weekend in the UK. Independent sensation Will Ospreay captured the Championship from Bobby Fish in his debut for Ring of Honor but 48 hours later Ospreay lost the championship to Marty Scurll, who also recently debuted for the company on this UK run. Conventional wisdom would think a rematch will go down in a few weeks at Final Battle to take care of both Ospreay and Fish’s rematch clause.  Fish was originally scheduled to face CMLL’s Dragon Lee for the championship at Final Battle.

Mickie James Returns To WWE at NXT Takeover: Toronto – WWE

In the first of two big pieces of news coming out of last night’s NXT Television taping, former WWE Women’s and Diva’s Champion Mickie James will be the next challenger for NXT Women’s Champion Asuka at NXT Takeover: Toronto on November 19th.  James last performed in-ring with WWE in 2010 and was also a guest trainer with NXT in 2013.

Roddy Versus The World – YouTube

WWE has let the cat out of the bag on their outlets, former ROH & PWG World Champion Roderick Strong made his debut for NXT last night at the aforementioned television tapings. In a backstage interview, Strong stated “Roddy Versus The World” starts now and cribbed a phrase from the former Best In The World’s playbook declaring “Luck Is For Losers.”

TNA Sale Turning Ugly – With Spandex

While things are looking up for one brand based out of Orlando, things are getting contentious in the other.  The attempt to sell TNA Wrestling has taken an ugly turn with TNA President Billy Corgan now suing Dixie Carter and TNA Wrestling. Documents in the case have been requested to be sealed, but it’s believed the lawsuit is over Corgan’s bid to purchase the company from Carter earlier this month.

The Morning Roundup: CWC Edition 9/15/16

We’re going to spend the first half of this roundup catching you up on last night’s live Cruiserweight Classic finale show from its barnburner semifinals to the bracket-busting final match.

Cruiserweight Classic Finale Results – WWE

TJ Perkins survived Kota Ibushi in the Semifinals and Gran Metalik in the Finals, and he has the scars on his chest to prove it.  With the win, Perkins is not only the Cruiserweight Classic winner but also the new WWE Cruiserweight Champion heading into Raw on Monday Night, when the cruiserweight division is scheduled to kick off. In addition to an exciting finals match, both semifinal matches were outstanding with Metalik defeating Zack Sabre, Jr in a fantastic back and forth clash of styles and the aforementioned incredible Perkins-Ibushi match which was on par with or exceeding the best matches in the tournament so far.

While the final two was a slight surprise to many (Ibushi-Sabre had been pencilled in by many as the predicted final), Perkins is an excellent choice for first champion of the new division. Having wrestled all over the world, including huge national and international stages like NJPW, CMLL, & TNA, transitioning to working live every Monday shouldn’t be a struggle. Perkins also has a feel-good story, rising up from homelessness, that the company should be able to use to get audiences behind him.
