ROH Adds Six-Man Championship – ROH Wrestling

Ring of Honor will be introducing a new Six-Man Tag Team Championship with a tournament beginning at All Star Extravaganza 8.  Teams announced so far include The Bullet Club, The Cabinet, and Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian & Kamaitachi.  With the popularity of six-man matches in Mexico (see also Lucha Underground) I’d expect some of the talent coming to ROH from new partner CMLL will be involved in the division as well as the teams in New Japan’s NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Division.

Alberto Del Rio On The Outs Again – Wrestling INC

Wrestling INC is reporting that Alberto Del Rio gave notice to WWE 60 Days ago and will not be returning once his wellness policy suspension is completed.   Things seemed to go south with Del Rio rather rapidly after the dissolution of the League of Nations and then he and Paige, who he has been romantically linked, being drafted to separate shows.

SmackDown Tournament Semifinals Set – WWE

After The Hype Bros defeat of The Vaudevillains and Rhyno & Heath Slater’s victory over the returning Headbangers, the semifinals in the tournament to crown SmackDown Tag Team Champions are set.  Next week, American Alpha faces the Usos and Hype Bros square off with Rhyno & Heath Slater.  C’mon Rhyno & Slater, Beulah needs a double wide and an in-ground pool.  The winners of next week’s matches will meet in the Finals at BackLash.

Orton-Wyatt/Ziggler-Miz at BackLash – WWE

Also coming out of last night’s SmackDown Live, The Eater of Worlds will face The Viper at BackLash.  This matchup is a sticky wicket as both men need to gain some momentum, Wyatt, fresh off another Family breakup and Orton, fresh off a Brock Lesnar thrashing.  In addition, Dolph Ziggler will challenge The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship.

Shelton Benjamin Returns – WWE

Last night on SmackDown it was announced Shelton Benjamin was returning to WWE to the SmackDown brand.  Now, as someone pointed out on Twitter last night, can we get Charlie Haas back for a WGTT/American Alpha feud?

New #1 Contender – WWE

Also last night, Dolph Ziggler shocked many pinning AJ Styles to gain the opportunity to challenge Dean Ambrose for the WWE Championship.  I love Ziggler but I question not using the opportunity to finally pull the trigger on a Bray Wyatt main event push at an event as high-profile as SummerSlam.

Lesnar Will Face No Punishment from WWE – Wrestling Observer

A WWE spokesperson told TMZ that due to Brock Lesnar’s part-time status with the company, Lesnar isn’t tested under WWE’s wellness policy so he will not be disciplined for his positive USADA tests.

WWE Payback 2016 Preview

payback

Payback airs tonight on the WWE Network, and is being billed as the first major event of the “New Era.”

WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. AJ Styles

The main event perhaps best epitomizes what the “New Era” may entail – establishment versus independents.  Reigns has been finding his way as the official face of the company for about a month, while embracing the jeers of the WWE Universe with a slightly smug swagger.  An outside observer might view Reigns as a champion grown in a sterile environment – the bloodline, professional football player, has only ever wrestled in a WWE/developmental ring.  Combine this with the swoonworthy looks and the marketing department of a publicly traded company, and you have a relatively young guy (not yet 31) who can parade around on talk shows in a suit and ponytail, carrying the belt with the giant company logo.

Compare and contrast to beloved Internet darling and independent “journeyman” AJ Styles.  This list of indy titles, awards, and 5-star matches he’s accumulated in a 14-year career has made him one of the most respected wrestlers alive.  However, he’s a 38-year old who has gotten called “rookie” on an uncomfortably regular basis.  And, there will be ~18,000 people in attendance whose emotions would range from “not that upset” to “over-the-moon ecstatic” if he finds a way to win the strap tonight.

That dichotomy is only half the bout.  Lurking ringside will undoubtedly be the Gallows and Machine Gun, fresh off demolishing the Usos in a fashion not often seen since the APA vs. Public Enemy.  I think it’s widely expected that some form of “Club” will result from this match – Gallows, Anderson, and AJ Styles?  Or, Gallows, Anderson, and Finn Balor?  Or, Gallows, Anderson… and Roman Reigns?    The “New Era” will almost certainly commence with the dawning of a new super stable.

Prediction: Roman Reigns retains, and Gallows and Gun align with the Roman Empire. Continue reading →
