The Wrestlemania of the summer is here! Now 4-hours, SummerSlam kicks off tonight at 7 PM from Barclays Arena in Brooklyn, NY on pay-per-view and the WWE Network.  Following last night’s Takeover this show has a lot to live up to, so let’s run down the card and get you ready for tonight’s festivities!

Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker

Not much needs to be explained about the main event of SummerSlam.  At Wrestlemania XXX, Brock Lesnar ends the streak and he and Paul Heyman spend over a year reminding the WWE Universe of that fact at every turn.  Now, the Deadman has returned to take another shot at the Conqueror after costing him the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Battleground.  I suppose you could bring up their previous encounters in the mid-2000s, but this one is all about redemption for the Streak.

Amazing stat: this will be Undertaker’s first SummerSlam match 7 years, and his first non-WrestleMania pay-per-view match in 5 years.

Winner Takes All- WWE World Heavyweight Championship vs. WWE United States Championship:  Seth Rollins vs. John Cena

What started out as a war of words, with Cena chastising the Architect’s cheating ways as champion, turned violent during a United States Championship match between the two on the July 27th Raw.  During the Cena victory, Rollins broke Cena’s nose with a brutal knee strike, putting the status of a Winner Takes All match in question.  After emergency surgery, Cena finally accepted the match to co-main event SummerSlam.

Despite widespread criticism of his reign, as a huge fan of 1980’s Ric Flair, Rollins has been killing it the cowardly heel champion role and with Cena’s recent turn as United States Champion his in-ring work has been some of the best of his career.  I’m expecting another great match from two of WWE’s top talents.

Bray Wyatt & Luke Harper vs. Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose

A family feud from pay-per-view’s past begins anew as the Wyatt Family and the remnants of the Shield resume their aggressions.  Back at Money in the Bank, Bray Wyatt cost Roman Reigns the coveted briefcase and became the spark which re-ignited the feud.  Flash-forward to Battleground, the prodigal son, Luke Harper returned to the Wyatt Family aiding Wyatt in his victory over Reigns, causing a reunion of Shield brothers with Dean Ambrose coming to Roman’s aid.

If their six-man Elimination Chamber match, one of my favorite matches of 2014, is any indication this should be outstanding.

Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro

Less than 24 hours after a brutal ladder match, Kevin Owens is back to Fight Owens Fight, against the Swiss Superman, Cesaro.  The tension between these two internet favorites began as both men chased John Cena’s United States Championship and Owens attacked Cesaro during his shot, costing him the championship.  After Owens gained a singles victory over Cesaro a few weeks back, the pair have been warring in tag team action in the build up to their clash at SummerSlam.

Stardust & Cosmic King Barrett vs. Stephen Amell & Neville

Back in May, Arrow star Stephen Amell became the object of Stardust’s hero obsession while watching Raw from the front row.  After months of twitter taunting Amell visited Raw one again and could take Stardust’s taunts no longer after Stardust shoved Amell on the August 25th edition of Raw.  Amell proceeded to jump the barrier and attack the Prince of Dark Matter leading to a comic book themed tag team match with Amell taking Neville as a partner and Stardust enlisting the Cosmic King, Wade Barrett to his super villain team.

Dolph Ziggler w/Lana vs Rusev w/The Always Hot Submissive Summer Rae

A late addition to the card, the genesis of this match goes back to May when Lana ended her association with Rusev by hooking up with Dolph Ziggler.  Rusev went through a mourning period trying to rekindle things with Lana before destroying Ziggler’s throat and replacing her with Summer Rae.  Now, Ziggler is back for revenge and we have a match!

Randy Orton vs. Sheamus

The latest chapter in the never-ending feud between the Viper and the Celtic Warrior stems from Sheamus’ Money in the Bank victory.  The following month at Battleground, Orton defeated Mr. Money in the Bank and then ruined Sheamus’ attempted cash-in on Seth Rollins following a match with Orton, leading to tonight’s match.

Amazing fact: Orton and Sheamus’ first pay-per-view match was at Royal Rumble 2010 and the two have wrestled in 17 televised singles matches.  Not to mention multi-man matches, tag team matches, Royal Rumbles, Money In The Bank Matches, and Elimination Chamber matches.

Three-Team Elimination Match: Team Bella- Alicia Fox, Nikki & Brie Bella vs. Team BAD- Sasha Banks, Naomi, & Tamina Snuka vs. Team PCB- Paige, Charlotte, & Becky Lynch

The totally organic and not forced Divas Revolution continues with a three-team elimination match between the major diva factions within WWE.  I kid, I kid.  While Sasha Banks and Bayley set a high bar for tonight’s divas action, given some time this could be the first real opportunity for an NXT style divas match to occur on a WWE pay-per-view as four of the competitors in this match are alumni of the critically acclaimed NXT division.

WWE Intercontinental Championship Triple Threat Match: Ryback vs. The Big Show vs. The Miz

When the Miz’s hand goes up, you be quiet.  Moved from last month’s Battleground show due to Ryback’s knee injury, the Big Show and the Miz have been foiling each other’s attempts to capture Ryback’s championship for months.  The Big Show prevented the Miz from getting his title shot on the June 1st Raw and Miz repaid the Giant by spoiling his Money in the Bank championship match.  Now, Ryback defends against both challengers in a triple threat.

Kickoff Match- Fatal Four Way for the WWE Tag Team Championship: The Prime Time Players vs. The New Day vs. The Lucha Dragons vs. Los Matadores

These four team have been feuding over the tag team championships and eight man tag team contests for months so throwing them into a giant, fun, and chaotic Fatal Four Way clusterf*ck seems like a no-brainer.  The real story in this match is the New Day’s quest to regain their tag team championship and the powers that be putting the Fatal Four Way obstacle in their path.
