Wednesday Night Wrestling Preview 1/28/15

WWE NXT 8PM & 11PM + On Demand on WWE Network

Previously on NXT, an NXT Championship #1 Contenders Tournament began, Bayley laid out the NXT Women’s Champion Charlotte, Team Thick scored an upset against the Vaudevillians, and Sami Zayn demanded William Regal give him a non-title match with Kevin Owens.

As a result it looks like we’ve got ourselves a contract signing.  After relenting to Zayn’s demands to get his hands on best friend Kevin Owens, William Regal will preside over the contract signing for the main event of NXT Takeover on February 11th.  Can these men with such a storied past keep their fists to themselves?

Moving on to the tournament, advancing to the semi-finals in last week’s contender tournament matches were Finn Balor and Hideo Itami.  Now they await the winner of tonight’s two big contests featuring the renewal of personal issues: the undefeated Baron Corbin and his chief rival Bull Dempsey and Adrian Neville squares off against Tyson Kidd.

Fresh off of scoring a shocking victory over the former #1 contenders to the NXT Tag Titles, Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake are looking to cash in on their hot streak by immediately challenging the Lucha Dragons for the straps.  They’ll get that match tonight on NXT.

And finally, the awkwardness between Bayley and Charlotte will be put to the test in a tag team match tonight.  The sometime friends/sometime opponents have hit another rough spot after the Human Hug Machine, Bayley to Belly suplexed Charlotte last week AFTER saving her from their opponents tonight, Team BAE- Sasha Banks & Becky Lynch.

Lucha Underground 8PM El Rey Network & Saturdays at 4PM on UniMas

Previously on Lucha Underground…

Just two weeks into his Lucha Underground career, Cage is getting a shot at the Lucha Underground Champion, Prince Puma.  After demolishing the competition in his four-way elimination debut match, Cage threw down the gauntlet to Puma both verbally and physically, attacking Puma after his title defense against Fenix.  Now, Konnan’s protegé will make his second title defense against the machine, Cage.

Also on tap for tonight’s show:

  • The Crew vs. Aerostar, Argenis, & Super Fly
  • Fenix vs. Mil Muertes

The Morning Roundup 1/28/15

Bubba Ray Dudley Interview –

I’m all in on a return by Bubba. Either by bringing back both Dudleys or letting him reprise his Bully Ray persona as a singles with his main squeeze Velvet Sky on his arm perhaps?

Impact Returns to Orlando – Impact Wrestling

TNA returns to Universal Studios for a 5 night run in February.  It will be interesting to see if they continued their “focused” lighting look or something more similar to past lighting set-ups.

Bray Wyatt Grants Wish – WWE

The Eater of Worlds granted his first Make-A-Wish to a brother in cause, teen Wyatt fan Jovanni before Royal Rumble.

Defending the Rumble…Again

An hour before the second straight “Royal Rumble Meltdown” in as many years, social media was abuzz with praise for a Match of the Year candidate, rightfully praising three incredible talents and anticipating the 2015 Royal Rumble match.  An hour later?  Twitter was figuratively screaming and yelling that WWE doesn’t understand their fans.  Reports came out that fans in Philly decided punishing the talents they claim to support by blocking their exit from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.  Let’s stick it to Fandango because Daniel Bryan didn’t win!  (Wait…what?)  #CancelWWENetwork was trending.  All because a scripted show didn’t give grown adults what they wanted.

A lot of stray thoughts went through my mind in preparing for this article, many that if put to paper would look like the ramblings of a madman.  One instance involved hypothesizing the reaction if social media was around in 1993 when Yokozuna last eliminated Hall of Famer Randy Savage, 4 months into his WWE career.  The analogy isn’t quite as direct to 2015, but I can feel the butt hurt through the timestream.

While I’m proudly a part of a section of internet fans who felt that the Rumble was an extremely entertaining show, I’m not going to tell you that you dear reader, should you disagree with the selection of Roman Reigns as Rumble winner, are wrong.  Did I have problems with the Rumble match?  Some.  I would have made the final elimination of Rusev mean more and I would have had Wyatt in that spot.  Could I have done without Show/Kane’s dominance?  Sure, but at the same time I’m not hitting an Usos’ rental car over it.  And its faults can never overshadow how balls out amazing the triple threat title match was.  So, huge thumbs up from the Keymaster.

To the angry wrestling fan, heavily invested in social media and online spoilers, yes, your opinion counts.  However, it’s not the only or always the majority opinion.  I’d like to take you back to something I wrote around this time last year.

WWE Network Hits One Million

It’s not without irony that the WWE has announced that it’s Network has passed the much coveted 1 Million Subscriber milestone the same week in which #CancelWWENetwork was a top worldwide trend.  In fact, word is that far more people have subscribed over the past couple of days then cancelled.  I’m guessing Time et al won’t be following-up with that.

One million has often been cited in the past as a potential “break-even” number for the Network.  It will be interesting to see what happens to the subscription numbers as we get closer to Wrestlemania.

Notes from the official WWE Press Release:

  • 1 million in under a year makes them the “fastest-growing digital subscription service.
  • Recent sharp increases due to successful Free November promo, launch in UK
  • Credit also to significant additionals following the ROyal Rumble
  • 90% of subscribers log-in weekly, 99% monthly

The Morning Roundup 1/27/15

Gonna #CancelWWENetwork?  I’ll just be over here enjoying classic shows, random Nitro/SNME/etc anytime I want, NXT Takeover Specials, and HD quality PPVs every month for ten bucks. Anywayyyy, my day job kept me pretty busy yesterday, but I hope to get my thoughts on the Rumble up at some point.  Spoiler Alert: I don’t agree with the angry nerds.

Arnold to the Hall – WWE

The Governator will be the newest inductee to the celebrity wing of the WWE Hall of Fame.

Fast Lane Announcements – Lords of Pain

Triple H has challenged Sting to a “face-to-face” at next months’ Fast Lane PPV.  Also, John Cena versus Rusev has been announced for the show as well.

Casket Match for Smackdown – YouTube

I can’t believe the burial of Daniel Bryan going on. Main eventing Smackdown for the third week straight. Disgraceful. /sarcasm
