A packed Raw with a couple of long matches, no celebrity guest host, and storyline developments?  Without cramming everyone on the roster into the broadcast?  Maybe they should think about a brand split again.  Perhaps it’s the live WWE experience talking but that was quite the development filled Raw to close the year out.  Let’s dissect.

Daniel Bryan is Back!

Let’s start with the biggest story coming out of Raw.  After teasing retirement on Twitter and during his promo, former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan announced he would be making his in-ring return in 4 weeks at the Royal Rumble.

It wasn’t quite the level of deception when salmon suited Mark Henry announced his retirement, but until he broke into the “No!” portion of his speech, Bryan was convincing.  After losing his father and everything we’ve heard over the past 6 months about his health troubles, Bryan having to walk away seemed plausible.

Instead, he will make his long-awaited return in one of the most important matches of the year, certainly shaking things up when it comes to predicting a winner for the 30-man match.  Roman Reigns seems to be the company’s choice, but reports have come out speculating guys like Ziggler could be given the nod.   Now add Bryan into the mix, one year after his 2014 Royal Rumble snub, AND Rollins’ Money in the Bank briefcase looming over the Cena-Lesnar match, the field of combatants for the championship match for WrestleMania is wide open.

Monday Night Raw Preview 12/29/14

Happy almost New Year, marks! For the last episode of 2014, Monday Night Raw sweeps through the nation’s capitol for some hard-hitting, bone-crunching action! Pre-show notes:

  • The Ascension Debuts: The time has come! The longest-reigning NXT tag team champions are making their WWE debut tonight. The last time we saw Konnor and Viktor, they were on the losing end of a match against Finn Balor and Hideo Itami, but long-time NXT followers know that they are not to be trifled with. It remains to be seen whether they will keep their uber-serious personas from NXT, as their vignettes are certainly bordering camp overload.
  • Edge and Christian Host Raw: One of the greatest tag teams in WWE history hosts Raw the same night as the debut of the Ascension? Hopefully E&C acknowledge the new guys in a passing-of-the-torch-type of way. Even if not, it’s always great to see Edge and Christian back together.
  • Year End Surprises: With still roughly a month before the Royal Rumble, several WWE superstars will be looking to close out 2014 with a bang. Dolph Ziggler has had a great year, and the Dean Ambrose/Bray Wyatt feud seems to be hurtling towards a conclusion. Hopefully these characters will get some fresh direction, if not tonight, then in the new year.
  • Split Roster: It’s worth noting that WWE is also doing a live show in Richmond, VA as a part of WWE’s Holiday Tour, so some familiar faces might not be onscreen tonight, or will make an appearance at the beginning or end of the show, in an abbreviated capacity.

That’s it — enjoy the show and see you in the new year!
