The Morning Roundup 12/30/13

AJ Styles to appear in Ring of Honor, TNA Negotiations break down– PW Insider

PWInsider is reporting that negotiations to bring AJ back to TNA have broken down and the chances he returns in the near future are “slim.” The same day this news came out, Ring of Honor announced Styles will be appearing at their Nashville television taping. If Sinclair Broadcasting (ROH’s parent company) knows what’s #BestForBusiness, they’ll do whatever they can to ink Styles to more dates. This could be HUGE for Ring of Honor.

Tribute to the Troops Extras– YouTube

WWE has a cool playlist of the extra matches for this past Saturday’s Tribute to the Troops. Highlights? Oh, just the Shield entering from a tank.

Jay Briscoe has challenged ROH Champion Adam Cole for Briscoe’s customized ROH World Championship. NSFW Language within, but Briscoe is a 10.

1/3 SmackDown & 1/1 Main Event Taping News *Spoilers Within*

There was a MAJOR spoiler for a returning superstar announced for tonight’s Raw that is all over the internet this morning, if you’ve managed to avoid it I won’t spoil it for you until after the jump.

Taped for Main Event, airing in international markets and

  • Kofi Kingston vs. Damien Sandow
  • The Funkadactyls vs. Rosa Mendes & Alicia Fox
  • Miz TV with Brodus Clay. Biggest news here was that Brodus has new music. Brodus was also sporting a gold chain in the style of Kama when he melted down the Undertaker’s Urn. The news sites ran with our picture of Brodus stating that he had a “new look” but it wasn’t far off from his Funkasaurus garb.

Taped for SmackDown:

  • The Shield vs. The Usos
  • Fandango vs. R-Truth
  • The Brotherhood vs. Luke Harper and Erick Rowan for the Tag Team Championship
  • Nikki Bella vs. Aksana
  • Big E Langston vs. Curtis Axel
  • The Shield vs. The Usos & CM Punk

There was also a #BadNewsBarrett segment filmed twice. The reshoot resulted in Barrett gloating in the ring and CM Punk coming out to confront him, deliver a GTS to send the crowd home happy. This portion most likely will not air on Smackdown.

It was also announced that the final Raw before WrestleMania XXX will be held March 31st at the Verizon Center.

Now about that spoiler…

The Afternoon Roundup 12/27/13

No Jericho any time soon– PW Torch

With names like Batista and presumably, Brock Lesnar returning soon, you can count Y2J as a name that’s probably not returning soon. Jericho hinted on Twitter Thursday night that he is not returning to WWE “any time soon.”

Cody’s Moonsault– WrestleShare

At last night’s live event in Madison Square Garden, Cody Rhodes pulled off a moonsault from the top of the cage during the Brotherhood’s Tag Team Championship Steel Cage Match against The Real Americans. Take a look at the picture linked above and here’s the video.

Jeff Hardy Written off TNA TV, temporarily– WrestlingINC

Jeff Hardy lost his smile after last night’s Impact Wrestling. Check out the #Impact365 video above. Word is that he’s just going to be gone temporarily while TNA tapes in the UK in early 2014. Hardy cannot go to the United Kingdom due to his legal troubles in the past.

Daniel Bryan Q&A– Grantland

Our pal the Masked Man had the opportunity to chat it up with Daniel Bryan.

More Title Unification?

On their official website today, the WWE teased the idea of merging the US Title and the Intercontinental title.  Considered to be the mid-card titles, both belts have historically been held by veterans on their way down, or rookies on their rise to the top.  However, it seems recently that guys with no direction, are given the title to hold for months and area never actually forced to defend them.  However, this is not due to a lack of depth in the roster.  Each guy could easily have 4 or 5 suitors after their respected titles.

By throwing this up on their front page, I believe the WWE is testing the waters on the public would handle it.  After unifying the WWE and World Heavyweight title, it appears the WWE is trying to trim back the titles. Lets look at the good and the bad.  Good: It makes the one title more special than the two separate straps. Bad: It takes a title away for an up-comer to seek or hold.  Bad: It ends the prestige of one of these long running titles.  Good: Allows for more of the roster to go after one title instead of being split between the two.

One wild idea I thought of today: could the WWE being moving away from having titles completely?  I know it sounds like a crazy idea, but titles force you to have story lines.  What has the WWE being getting criticism for recently?  Bad story lines.  If you remove titles from wrestling, you can move to just standard, garden variety matches and don’t have to worry about the creative aspect to it.  Vince is rumored to have said at a creative meeting this week that there are no longer any babyfaces or heels (somewhere, Louis Tully is slamming people through tables in a rage).  I do not ever see this happening, but I do think the WWE is trying to consolidate the titles as much as possible.  The less titles, the less guys you have to make stories for.

What do you think?  One or Two secondary titles? What would you name it?
