Over the past month, TNA Wrestling has been conducting a “Wheel of Dixie” TNA Heavyweight Championship Tournament to crown a new champion in the wake of AJ Styles’ “departure” from the company in story-lines. Last night in Orlando, FL the tournament final was taped for the 12/19 Final Resolution Impact Wrestling Special for Spike.
This Thursday on Impact, the semifinals go down with Jeff Hardy meeting Bobby Roode & Kurt Angle facing Magnus.
We don’t normally do taped show spoilers around here, but a major title changes are too big to sit on, especially one taped so far in advance. If you don’t want the finish of the tournament ruined I suggest you stop reading right now and perhaps give some of the other articles on the site a look.
If you’re still with us, here’s the 411 from WrestleZone:
Magnus defeated Jeff Hardy at a TNA Impact Wrestling taping event tonight to become the new TNA World Heavyweight Champion.
The Dixieland match started inside a steel cage, which the opponents were forced to escape. Once outside the cage, the title was suspended above the entrance ramp, with ladders made readily available for use.
TNA President Dixie Carter was ringside for the match, as was her nephew Ethan Carter III, and her assistant Rockstar Spud. They all got involved in some way during the match, basically costing Jeff Hardy the world title. To end the broadcast, Magnus celebrated with the Carter family and Rockstar Spud.
So it looks like Magnus is getting the “Face of TNA” push and will face off with AJ Styles in a unification match down the line. It’s a bit refreshing to see a new face holding the strap, however, the heel faction controlling the title in TNA seems to be the crutch that the creative team in Orlando leans upon A LOT.
