My favorite part of WrestleMania week each year are the interviews our namesake Chad Dukes gets from Radio Row at WWE Fan Axxess and this year’s line up might just be the most impressive yet. First on the docket is the man-beast Ryback who is scheduled to face Mark Henry on Sunday.
The man who excels in the 3-on-1 handicap match came right out of the gate with bold statements, declaring his intentions to Shell Shock the World’s Strongest Man this Sunday.
No doubt in my mind that I can get him up.
I think at the end of the night, when it’s all said and done, people are going to remember coming out of WrestleMania 29 is Ryback picking up Mark Henry over his head, marching around the ring, and 75,000 plus screaming, ‘Feed Me More.’
Declaring himself a home run hitter, Ryback certainly isn’t lack confidence going into Sunday’s match. However, Shell Shocking Mark Henry, getting that behemoth up and on to the base of his spine, will be no small feat and certainly would be a WrestleMania moment for the Las Vegas native. With the stacked lineup that Mania 29 already has, stealing the show with another big man like Henry, is obviously in Ryback’s sights as a springboard to making himself the “next guy.” I think it’s great how he’s not giving the standard line, he truly wants to have a great match on the Showcase of the Immortals.
Speaking of being the next guy, perhaps the biggest take away from this interview are Ryback’s other intentions and his biggest goal, to unseat John Cena as top dog in WWE.
Chad: What’s the next logical goal for you, you’ve accomplished so much already…
Ryback: It’s to take over the #1 position from John Cena and take over the company and I’m not shy about saying it. John, I respect him more than anyone, he’s a very hard working individual. He’s been on top for 8-10 years now and he’s been untouchable. I am the one guy that can touch him and I believe I can outsell him on merchandise, and I can do things he has not yet done.
Can Ryback be that guy? Time will certainly tell. He’s got a great look and a great character going for him, which is a good start. Another unique thing about Ryback, early in his career he’s shown a knack for getting fan support from both the younger and older members of the WWE Universe. While some may have initially thought Ryback wasn’t ready during his CM Punk feud, if anything, that feud has done him a great service by “making” him as a top tier superstar in the fans eyes.
Originally, debuting as Skip Sheffield on NXT and as part of the Nexus, Ryback, like many of the original Nexus’ fans looks back at that time very fondly.
I’m the Al Bundy of Nexus, I think we’re still gonna have a run down the road.
While it was perhaps said in jest, from the tone of his voice, you can tell that it is a time that he truly enjoyed. Imagine how powerful a seasoned group of Ryback, Wade Barrett, Daniel Bryan, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, and Darren Young would be? Down the line it could work like other “reunions” have in the past. As a fan of the Nexus, I’m all in.
A huge thank you to Ryback for joining CDW at WWE Fan Axxess at WrestleMania 29!
