Apparently, Funk is not on a roll to coin a phrase from his theme song. A rumor hit the interwebs Wednesday that Brodus Clay and the Funkasaurus gimmick has been put on hold due to Vince McMahon’s belief that Clay’s ring work “wasn’t where it needs to be.”
Here’s the piece that was on WrestlingInc:
The Wrestling Globe reports that WWE officials have decided to put Brodus Clay’s “Funkasaurus” gimmick on hold for the time being. Word is that Vince McMahon feels that Clay’s ring work wasn’t where it needed to be for WWE TV.
Personally, I held off on posting this rumor due to the unfamiliarity of the source, the Wrestling Globe. When I checked it out the Wrestling Globe’s website had not been updated since December 2011, but apparently its a free email newsletter. However, Wednesday afternoon some more sources like PWTorch and Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter started to back up the rumor on the Funkasaurus’ status.
Meltzer’s quote via Bleacher Report:
In a big surprise, Vince McMahon made the call to take Clay off television, feeling his ring work wasn’t good enough…Apparently it was a match with Slater that was taped and pulled from Smackdown that did him in.
And just when people were starting to warm up to the big lug and his giant-assed dancers.
I’m naturally inclined to not believe rumors like this without analyzing them a bit. I mean, Clay has still been in dark matches since the SmackDown match in question. He’s not CM Punk, Dolph Ziggler, or Jericho in the ring, but he is certainly more capable than say, the Great Khali or Santino Marella of being in the Elimination Chamber. Despite the comedy at least I’d buy Clay as a threat.
On the other hand, sometimes when there’s smoke there’s fire. We haven’t seen the Funkasaurus on television going on two weeks on either SmackDown or Raw. And if they wanted to keep him out there there’s NXT or Superstars as well.
It’s a bit puzzling. Clay wasn’t being asked to do much in his matches and the entrance was beginning to get over with crowds. Where was the problem? I’m not the biggest fan of the gimmick, but if he hated the gimmick you couldn’t tell. He made chicken salad out of…well you know the rest.
Now bear with me I’m spit-balling here, suppose that taking him off television is a punishment. So is Clay now being punished for getting over with a rumored punishment gimmick? Should Clay return to Television down the line as the Mastodon of Mayhem is his career irreparably damaged? I’d lean towards “yes” on that last one. Clay could always rejuvenate himself down the line like Mark Henry or he could be remembered as the Dancing Dinosaur. A slippery slope to be sure.
What about you guys, how do you feel about the man from Planet Funk in captivity possibly having the rug pulled out from under him? Let us know in the comments.
